It looks like Mr. Pladgeman and I see the same future for custom thin clients.
Jack

Over the last few years, the average CPU speed has increased to over 500 Mhz. With a faster CPU, running Linux or embedded Windows XP (XPe) has become much more feasible. These operating systems are better-suited to running local applications; in addition, many provide full-function browsers with Java Virtual Machine (JVM) capability, email, enhanced terminal emulation, and much more of the functionality that users are used to seeing on the PC. Windows 2003 for thin clients now has high-color support, sound delivered to the desktop, data compression, and better printing support. Citrix has also updated its product to provide better security, better compression, bidirectional sound, published applications, and security enhancements such as smart card and biometric device support. Consultants have been saying for a long time that thin clients are the future. Thin client technology has finally caught up with the vision. Most intelligent thin clients can work nearly like a PC, giving the user all of the desired flexibility and performance while providing the data processing department with its control and security benefits. Today there are many thin client models to choose from with varying CPU speeds, memory capacities, storage capacities, and operating systems.

Customized Thin Clients
Customization of thin clients is gaining importance with both Linux and Xpe models because customers have their own ideas of what is needed on a machine. Thin-client manufacturers that can respond quickly to customization requests are gathering momentum in what is becoming a huge market.

Sophisticated Printer Support
As a company requires printing of more complex types of data, such as barcodes, it is critical that the chosen thin-client technology can handle necessary printers and data streams. Barcodes require a more sophisticated printer session on the thin client.

For the complete text go to http://inertz.org/2008/04/13/the-progress-of-thin-clients/ Martin Pladgeman is President of BOSaNOVA, Inc.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://boundlesstechnologies.squarespace.com/journal/2008/4/3/matrox-graphics-and-boundless-technologies-announce-partners.html"><rss:title>Matrox Graphics and Boundless Technologies announce partnership that delivers superior multi-monitor thin client experience</rss:title><rss:link>http://boundlesstechnologies.squarespace.com/journal/2008/4/3/matrox-graphics-and-boundless-technologies-announce-partners.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject></dc:subject>

With Matrox Epic A , the Boundless ADDS 6700 thin client drives up to six monitors.

Montreal , Canada , April 1st, 2008 – Matrox Graphics Inc., the leading manufacturer of graphics solutions for professionals, and Boundless Technologies, a leading provider of thin clients, today announced the availability of Matrox Epic A graphics cards and EpicA software with Boundless Technologies’ ADDS 6700 thin client. He founded the Juran Institute, a training and consulting firm in Southbury, Conn.
He created the Pareto principle, also known as the 80-20 rule, which states that 80 percent of consequences stem from 20 percent of causes. Today managers use the Pareto principle, named for an Italian economist, to help them separate what Mr. Juran called the “vital few” resources from the “useful many.”
“Everybody who’s in business now adopts the philosophy of quality management,” David Juran said. “He came along at just the right time. Most of the reference books that have been written about this field are either books that he wrote or imitations.”
Among his best-known works were the “Quality Control Handbook” in 1951, the first mathematically rooted textbook on product quality, now entering its sixth edition, and “Managerial Breakthrough” in 1964, which described a step-by-step improvement process that inspired the Six Sigma and lean manufacturing philosophies.
Recently, Mr. Juran was working on an updated edition to another of his books. David Juran and Joseph De Feo, the Juran Institute’s chief executive, said they planned to finish the book.
“His belief was that you always have a project to keep your mind going,” Mr. De Feo said. “He always had something to do.”
Joseph Moses Juran was born in Braila, Romania, and immigrated to Minnesota with his family when he was 8 years old. Don’t just do it for the sake of profit.’ ”
Mr. Juran remained actively involved with the institute even after his official retirement in 1994. A celebration of the institute’s 25th anniversary also served as his 100th birthday party, with a cake decorated to resemble a stack of books he had written.
“He never really made a distinction between work and leisure. It’s a pretty simple affair, but a reminder to all of us that we are still here, still manufacturing products in the US. It has been another successful year, one that could not have happened without our customers, suppliers and our employees.

I would like to wish all of our friends and joyous holiday and a safe, healthy and prosperous 2008.

One final thought for 2007.

As a nation we face many difficulties today that we will continue to face in 2008. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the crisis in the mortgage industry, a market in turmoil, and a presidential election will be around to add stress to our lives. With all this going on in our lives we still lead the world in giving both in terms of money and time (90% of all American households give and close to 50% of all adults volunteer).

This is our special time of giving and I wanted to bring focus to the OLPC program. One Laptop per Child is a positive step toward eliminating ignorance in the world. For a $200 donation you can send a laptop to a child in a developing nation. Since November the OLPC has been offering a limited-time Give One Get One program in the United States and Canada. For $399 you can send one laptop to a needed child and get one for your child.

I’m reminded of a famous Dickens passage:

"This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased."

Please help erase the writing.

Jack

Happy birthday mom.

</rss:item></rdf:RDF>
